MCB’s main research and instructional facilities are in a seven-building complex on the east side of the main campus quadrangle (“the quad”), the center for campus activities in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences (LAS). Nearby, both the new Institute for Genomic Biology and the Beckman Institute also house MCB laboratories.

MCB is the largest school in the College of LAS, at Illinois’ flagship campus in Urbana-Champaign. A modern community of 100,000, Urbana-Champaign lies in the middle of Illinois’ farming region, conveniently located less than 2 hours south of Chicago, about 2 hours west of Indianapolis, and 3 hours north of St. Louis. The entertainment and recreational opportunities on and near the campus include a wide variety of musical, artistic, and sporting events. The campus has excellent recreation facilities for its students, staff, and alumni, and the world’s largest public university library system. Prospective or admitted students may arrange a campus visit.
