This is a clinical job doing genetic testing for patients. We will train the person but the individual must be willing to stay for a minimum of 2 years, as our commitment to training is expensive and time consuming. These include amniotic fluid and chorionic villus specimens for prenatal analysis to detect abnormalities such as Down syndrome; bone marrow and other hematological specimens to diagnosis, monitor and predict outcome in various cancers; and blood specimens for identification of congenital chromosome abnormalities resulting in mental retardation, organ malformation, infertility, etc. The analyses involve multiple skills including general lab skills, tissue culture, microscope screening, karyotype analysis, and preparation of karyotypes with computer assistance. The technical work is performed by individuals with a bachelor’s degree in biology or a related field. Certification in clinical cytogenetics can be obtained from the National Certification Agency after 1 year of experience in a laboratory directed by a certified director.
