General Study Skills Assistance

Strategies for Studying Biology Video by Brad Mehrtens, Instructor of MCB 150 and MCB Academic Advisor

A nice collection of study tips, links, and additional resources can be found at About.com/Biology. Each of these tips is so short that they seem deceptively simple, but they are each very powerful and neglecting to do them is behind virtually all unsuccessful attempts at our intro biology courses.

Molecular and Cellular Biology Tutoring:  The MCB Club: Ligase offers free peer tutoring for any student enrolled in a MCB core course.

One-on-One Tutoring Sessions
Students may choose to be individually tutored for any of the following courses:  MCB 150, 250, 252, and 354.  Individual peer-tutoring appointments can be scheduled by emailing ligaseuiuc@gmail.com. Please be sure to include your name, contact information, name of course for which you need tutoring and times that you are available.

Group Tutoring Sessions
Group tutoring is offered on a weekly basis for the following courses: MCB 150, MCB 250 and MCB 354.  Times will be announced in lecture or posted on the corresponding course web site.  Please email ligaseuiuc@gmail.com for further information.

Integrative Biology Tutoring:
Students enrolled in IB 150 are encouraged to utilize the course TAs, but if you are interested in finding a tutor please contact Tracey Hickox at hickox@illinois.edu.

Chemistry Learning Center:  The Chemistry Learning Center (212 Chemistry Annex) offers a variety of services to assist you with your chemistry courses.  Free drop-in tutoring is also available during the hours posted on their web site, http://www.chem.uiuc.edu/clcwebsite/.
For more information call (217) 333-2998.

Check out the online tutorials for CHEM 102 and 104: http://www.chem.uiuc.edu/clcwebsite/clctutorials.html

In our experience, students who struggle in biology generally struggle because of the chemistry behind the biology, especially if you are beginning in MCB 150.  The University of Illinois Department of Chemistry has put together a nice set of tutorials on basic chemistry which is likely to make both your biology course and your chemistry course make more sense, if you are interested.  That web site is found at the following URL:  http://www.chem.uiuc.edu/webfunchem/genchemtutorials.htm

American Chemical Society Student Affiliates: The American Chemical Society Student Affiliates offer free tutoring for all general and organic courses and for many upper-level electives. Email them to find out more at acstutoring@gmail.com.

Mathematics Tutoring:  The Department of Mathematics offers free tutoring for a few math courses.  Consult the math website, http://www.math.uiuc.edu/UndergraduateProgram/tutoring.html for the schedule for each course’s tutoring and to see a list of private tutors.

Physics Tutoring:  Fee-based tutoring is available through the Physics Department
(from $8 to $15/hr).  Listing will be updated by week 4 of SP11 semester, but many of the FA10 tutors will still be available. Visit http://physics.illinois.edu/courses/tutors.pdf for more information.

Office of Minority Student Affairs:  The Office of Minority Student Affairs offers a variety of services including tutoring, review sessions and supplemental instruction.  Consult the website for more information on these and other services: http://www.omsa.illinois.edu/academics/.
