I graduated from Southern Illinois University at Carbondale (SIUC) with my Bachelor of Science in speech communication with a specialization in public relations and a minor in journalism. As I was approaching graduation, I realized that I did not want to work in public relations. Some of my fellow student leaders decided to stay at SIUC to continue their education and encouraged me to do the same. As a first-generation, low-income student, I was unsure about pursuing a master’s degree, but my friends persisted. I earned my Master of Science in community development. Community development focuses on how to give and restore agency to individuals, groups, or communities, and understanding how culture, economics, education, social structures, and politics influence individuals and communities. The coursework focused on how to alleviate social problems through community and social change. We learned the importance of how community participation, community ownership, empowerment, inclusion, access and equity, social action, advocacy, networking, self-help, and lifelong learning would facilitate change for individuals, groups, or communities.
I was actively involved in student activities and leadership during my time at SIUC. My experience with student life and my desire to help others live their life as they see fit, led me to a career in higher education. I have worked in many areas in higher education that include academic advising, career services, academic support services, and student life. I have served as a first-year experience (FYE) curriculum chair. I have taught FYE, study-skills, career development, public speaking, and interpersonal communication courses. I have also worked in public health where I launched a new statewide injury prevention program.
My career has been very rewarding and has given me the opportunity to live and work in different states. I have found great satisfaction and accomplishment in helping students pursue their education and career goals. I could not imagine my life any different! While you are at UIUC – dream big, try new things, meet new people, live boldly – I will be there cheering you on!
