Lilia Garcia

I graduated in May 2021 with a Bachelors of Science in Biology from Illinois Wesleyan University, a small liberal arts college in Bloomington, IL. I was the first in my family to go to college, and navigating higher education was a real challenge. With the support of friends, professors, and staff, I was able to find opportunities and build a community outside of the classroom.

My first research experience at Illinois Wesleyan University introduced me to microbiology and I have been hooked ever since. Working with Dr. Cozy opened up many doors for me in a variety of fields. I joined a marine microbial ecology research project at REU Grice Marine Laboratory in Charleston, SC. During my junior year, I studied in Tanzania and researched insecticide use by small farmers. Lastly, I studied water quality and aquatic macroinvertebrate communities through UNM Sevilleta REU.

Campus involvement was a big part of my college career. I was a leader in SALSA (Spanish and Latine Student Association) and spent much of my time in the Office of Diversity and Inclusion. I collaborated with admissions, housing, and multifaith offices to help develop programs for community building. My biggest piece of advice for any student is to explore your hobbies and interests. That is how you build your community and learn about yourself.

I am excited to combine my love for science and mentorship as an academic advisor starting August 2021. I will also be an advisor for the SMCB study abroad programs. I'm here to support you, from your first semester at UIUC until your graduation.
