The School of Molecular & Cellular Biology is pleased to welcome Joe Boise as our new MCB Facilities and Lab Safety Assistant. We sat down with Joe recently to learn more about him and his role in the school.

Can you tell us a bit about yourself? What led you to this position?

I was led to this position by my interest in environmental biology. In 2020, I earned a master’s degree in biological sciences from Eastern Illinois University. During my coursework and after graduation, I worked with the Division of Research Safety here on campus, collecting hazardous waste. Before that, I worked at Facilities & Services in Facility Information Resources, working closely with the utility groups across campus. So, when I found this position that involves coordinating service work and managing lab safety, it felt like a great opportunity to combine everything I’ve experienced as part of this new position.

What drew you to work at the University of Illinois?

My first experiences here stem from a family background. My mother recently retired from working as a secretary in plant biology, so growing up, I was closely connected to the campus and visited often. Having lived in Tolono my whole life, I got to know the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign very well. I like the campus and the community. Even though it's a large campus, it provides enough space for individuality and comfort while attending or working here. When I started working with Facilities & Services, I enjoyed the professional interaction—collaborating with different units and trades. In Research Safety, I worked with different research groups, coordinating waste pickups and helping them improve procedures for everyone’s safety and so research can continue smoothly.

What does a typical day in your position look like?

Every day is different, but typically I handle routine maintenance issues and help our labs and research teams with any safety issues within the School of MCB. It could be a light fixture being out, plumbing, lab furniture, or office furniture. A normal day starts with checking email, addressing routine issues, and following up on service requests. I've also been working closely with the Division of Research Safety to correct safety issues reported in lab and facility audits.

What do you enjoy most about working in a university setting?

I enjoy knowing that my role, along with many others, contributes to the overall success and mission of research and the university. It's fascinating to get a behind-the-scenes look at ongoing research projects. Even though I may not have a direct hand in these projects, I know I have a big part in making sure everything is functioning correctly. So, in a way, I am involved!

What excites you most about your future at Illinois?

What excites me most is the potential to continue working in this position. This job offers a year-round opportunity to continue learning, growing, and watching things evolve, such as facility renovations and meeting new (and current) faculty. My goal is to have a positive impact, making things better than when I started, and this position allows me to do that. I look forward to my growing career here.
